Indianapolis Monthly

During the summer months of 2014, I held the position of Digital Intern with Indianapolis Monthly magazine. My main responsibilities were to manage content being uploaded to the website and upload content. I was also responsible for making sure photos were correctly edited to the website format.

Though the majority of my time with IM was spent uploading content and editing photos/photo albums, I did get the chance to write a few stories.

I was immediately thrown into the mix and helped cover the Indianapolis 500–arguably the most recognized race in the world next to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I was able to get a few stories out of that event.

Throughout the internship, I was able to get a few posts published on IM's website. Click the links below to see what I wrote.

I wrote about a few superstitions race crews had before the big race (the 500). I never imagined that it would be too difficult to write a quick post in the middle of The Brickyard with 33 Indycars roaring past–I was wrong. As a die-hard race fan, I've never been so distracted before in my life.

Very Superstitous: Indy 500 Crews Share Pre-Race Rituals

For this post, I was lucky enough to get an invite to The Last Row Party, which is an annual event to roast the 3 drivers who qualified for the last 3 postions of the 33-car grid. The event was very light-hearted and professional. Though the host could have been way more raunchy, he was polite–as were the drivers. Each driver knew they had a car that was better than where they qualified and stayed humble throughout the event. They were happy that they qualified–something the vast majority of people can't say they've done.

Party in the Back: Indy 500 Drivers Take Their Lumps

By chance, I happened to live near the person who has hand-crafted the winner's wreath for every Indianapolis 500 since 1991.  The wreath has been an icon to the 500 along with milk since the sixties. The quiet florist makes each wreath in her quaint shop the week of the race and spends around eight hours making it.

This next post was all about Lance Stephenson and his more-than entertaining antics during the Pacer-Heat playoffs. Though I don't know much about basketball, I do know Stephenson was quite the entertainer.

Lance Stephenson GIFs Gone Wild

Sir Lancelot continued to be known even after the Pacers were knocked out by the Heat. Stephenson continued the antics and showed everyone why he's in the NBA.

For this piece, I came across a video showing a small theatre building a new stage for an upcoming play. It was the first time The Phoenix Theatre had build a stage like this and I went to the theatre to see why it was done.

Father's Day, it comes around every year and people always want to show their appreciation–sometimes they don't know how. For this, I came up with 10 things people could do to entertain their dad, no matter what he's into.

Indiana's very own John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, visited Stephen Colbert to discuss his book and the movie based from it. What happened was pure gold as the conversation spiraled into whether Colbert or Green were cult leaders.

Being a Ball State student, I had to do a post about former BSU president, Jo Ann Gora. Here I highlighted 10 facts most people didn't know about the outgoing president.

Ten Things You May Not Know About Jo Ann Gora

World Cup fever had swept the United States as their national team advanced to the Round of 16. Mass Ave and Indianapolis's local professional soccer team, Indy Eleven, hosted a viewing party that spanned three city blocks. Before the party, viewers needed to know a few things about what they were getting into.

Indy Eleven's president, Peter Wilt, decided to tour every county courthouse during his travels. He did it so he could personally see what Indiana was all about and to help build a better business model for the team based in Indianapolis. Wilt learned a thing or two during his travels and kept a log via Twitter.
